Home Study & Courses
As well as our traditional appraisal and consultancy services we also offer two different types of course. One is by correspondence:-
- ‘Write for Children and Get Published’ Home Study Course
The other type of course takes the form of group writing days:-
- Writing for Children Workshop Days
These days are completely separate to our home study course but home study students would benefit from attending day courses should they get the opportunity.
1. ‘WRITE FOR CHILDREN & GET PUBLISHED’ HOME STUDY COURSE (from £300.00)
(Limited Places Only)
This is a highly individual and personalised tuition service based on Louise Jordan’s book How to Write for Children and Get Published. The course is run and tutored by Louise herself and each student will receive a copy of Louise’s book plus support material to help guide them through each module.
This is different to any other home study course on the market in that it is run solely by one tutor – Louise herself. Louise believes that the relationship between student and tutor is the most important thing and, as a result, the emphasis is on her personal feedback rather than fancy course material. For this reason the number of students that can be accepted at any one time are limited and places are given on application only.
The main course consists of ten modules:-
- The Picture Book
- Young Fiction
- Writing Fiction for the Educational Market
- General Fiction for 8 – 12 year-olds
- Teenage Fiction
- The Short Story
- Non-Fiction
- Poetry
- Self-Publishing
- Presentation and Approach
The aim of the course is that by the time a student reaches Module 10 they will have a piece – or pieces – of work that they could realistically submit to a publisher or agent.
For those wishing to continue their studies, having completed the main course, there are a further five modules which can be taken:-
- Subject Matter
- Plotting
- Characterisation
- Viewpoint
- Style
Each module consists of a set number of exercises that must be completed before a student can progress to the next module. There will also be a reading list provided for each module. The rate at which a student progresses through the course will vary from person to person although we do ask that all students complete the main course within a two year period. The follow-up course must be completed within one year.
The first module is provided as hard copy as part of the introductory pack. However the rest of the course is conducted ‘on-line’. If this is not possible, the course can be conducted by post.

2. WRITING FOR CHILDREN WORKSHOP DAYS
From time to time we will be running workshop days. These will take the form of group tutoring and will be structured around various subjects related to children’s publishing. The days will take place close to our South London office on a Saturday or Sunday and will include lunch and refreshments. Students have found that our workshop days are not only an invaluable source of information but, also, a great way of meeting up with other writers. There is no doubt that writing can be an isolated and frustrating occupation. We understand this and hope that our days offer support and encouragement as well as information. General Information
Please be aware that the aim of all our courses is to help writers think creatively and improve their work. While The Writers’ Advice Centre undertakes to help writers on the road to getting published, participants on our courses should be aware that there are no ‘guarantees’ of getting published or finding an agent. We always say to all our authors that if the only reason they are using our services is to find a publisher or agent, then we are not the right organisation for them and would prefer that they look elsewhere for assistance.
Having said that we are proud of the number of authors we have been able to help and would hope that our new course programme will provide further success to participating students.
